Yet, while Delta weighs on the economic recovery, odds remain good that it won’t short-circuit it. It is encouraging that vaccination rates have picked up, particularly in places where there has been a lot of reticence to get vaccinated; Delta has rightly spooked people into getting a jab.
The August employment report shows how closely tethered the economy’s fortunes are to Covid-19. As long as the pandemic continues to rage, it won’t be a straight line for the economic recovery — it will ebb and flow with waves of the pandemic. But if each new wave is less disruptive than the previous one and the pandemic continues to wind down, which still seems reasonable, the economy will return to full employment by early 2023.
