While driving offers more flexibility than airplane travel, there can still be a place for travel insurance.
“While some travelers have a tolerance for losing prepaid, non-refundable deposits, savvy travelers also purchase travel insurance for the travel assistance services that are often included in a travel insurance plan,” says Mueller. For example, all Berkshire Hathaway Travel
Protection policies offer concierge services as an added benefit.
“Travelers can access doctor or hospital referrals, theater tickets, dinner reservations and more, all designed to make a vacation not only safe but hassle-free,” Mueller says about concierge service.
Travel insurance is typically priced on a number of factors, such as age and trip cost. As an example: A couple, both age 42, with $1,000 total in nonrefundable trip deposits for a five-day NYC trip would pay around $40 total for the ExactCare Lite plan.
Mueller cautions it’s important consumers understand that travel insurance does not cover every situation and scenario, like fear of travel.
“Travel insurance is intended to cover common travel disruptions like injury or death (of traveler or relative) prior to departure or while traveling, forcing someone to return home early; medical emergencies while traveling, including a required medical evacuation; travel delays, missed connections, baggage issues, and much, much more,” she says.
