Muskegon-area girls basketball power rankings for week of Feb. 21

MUSKEGON – Another week of basketball has come and gone, and we’ve gained more information on who might be district title contenders this winter.

Before tonight’s big games, let’s take a look at how all the Muskegon-area girls basketball teams stack up. Below is the latest edition of the MLive Muskegon high school girls basketball power rankings for the 2021-22 season, presented in reverse order.

HONORABLE MENTION

Mason County Central (12-6)

10. Western Michigan Christian (12-4)

The Warriors held off Grand Rapids Covenant Christian (46-40) and rolled past Manistee (76-32) and Orchard View (69-18) last week and will take on Oakridge (7-11), Muskegon Catholic Central (8-9) and Manistee (3-14) this week before preparing for the district tournament.

9. Spring Lake (12-6)

The Lakers rolled past Coopersville (60-27) and held off Hudsonville Unity Christian (36-33) last week and will travel to Hamilton (8-9) and Grand Rapids West Catholic (17-1) this week before turning their attention to the district tournament.

8. Montague (14-4)

The Wildcats couldn’t overcome an off-shooting night as they fell to Hart (47-35) in a West Michigan Conference showdown last Thursday but they’ll have a chance to regain some momentum to close out the regular season against the likes of Ravenna (5-14) and Shelby (10-8) this week.

7. Muskegon (11-6)

The Lady Reds edged past Holland (57-52) last Tuesday but had no answers for Mona Shores in a 50-25 home loss. They’ll look to bounce back with a home game against Reeths-Puffer (12-5) tonight before ending the regular season against Zeeland East (2-16) and Kenowa Hills (8-9).

6. Reeths-Puffer (12-5)

The Rockets knocked off Mona Shores (42-32) last Tuesday to jump back into the league title race and added a 61-39 win over Holland to cap off the week. They’ll face Muskegon (11-6) and Grand Rapids Union (6-11) this week before taking on Coopersville (3-15) on Feb. 28 to wrap up the regular season.

5. Mona Shores (15-3)

The Sailors fell to Reeths-Puffer (42-32) last Tuesday but bounced back with a decisive win over Muskegon (50-25) on Friday. They’ll face Holland and Wyoming this week before preparing for the district tournament, where they’ll face the winner of Grand Rapids Union and Grand Haven in the district semifinals on March 2.

4. Ludington (14-5)

The Orioles dropped a 47-34 decision to Cadillac on Tuesday but bounced back with a 56-37 win over Muskegon Catholic Central on Friday. They’ll look to secure an outright Lakes Eight Conference title as they travel to Muskegon Heights Academy (5-7) on Friday.

3. Hart (15-3)

The Pirates secured their first West Michigan Conference championship in 29 years by edging Montague (47-35) last week after dropping a narrow 42-39 decision to Kent City earlier in the week. They’ll face Oakridge tonight before preparing for the district tournament, where they’ll face the winner of Holton and Hesperia in the district semifinals on March 2.

2. Newaygo (17-1)

The Lions rolled past Tri-County (70-30) and Grant (53-42) last week and will face Reed City (9-9) and Chippewa Hills (5-13) this week before preparing for the district tournament. They’ll face the winner of Comstock Park and Fremont in the district semifinals on March 2.

1. Kent City (18-0)

The Eagles survived a non-conference test against Hart (42-39) last Tuesday and rolled past Holton (59-23) to end the week. They’ll wrap up the regular season against West Michigan Aviation Academy (3-13) and White Cloud (8-11) this week before preparing for the district tournament on March 2.
