The monthly Governing Board meeting of Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy (NELA) was a little bit nostalgic for a few of the participants as two new members were accepted to serve on the board. The school principal, Melissa Wagoner proudly introduced Cody Chewning and Grant Hettleman to the current board members and audience at a meeting at the school.
The two men graduated from Northpoint and are now returning to serve their alma mater in a new role. “The return of our students, to impact the positive growth and development of the school is representative of the voice and power we instill in students through our program,” said Melissa Wagoner, Principal at Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy.
The school uses focused, relevant, cross-curricular topics and current global events to help develop the curriculum for all subjects. Students in grades 7 through 12 participate in community events, local service, self-guided learning, group projects, and rigorous academic studies throughout their years at NELA.
Students also have opportunities for international travel, team and individual sports, fieldwork, and wilderness experiences. Mr. Chewning and Mr. Hettleman actively participated in many of these opportunities during their years at NELA.
Cody Chewning
After graduating from NELA in 2012, Cody Chewning attended the University of Arizona where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree. Mr. Chewing is currently employed by the Town of Prescott Valley as a police officer. He looks forward to bringing his prior and current work experience to the board.
Grant Hettleman
Grant Hettleman graduated from NELA in 2016 and continued his education at Northern Arizona University. He earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Environmental Engineering and Advanced Chemistry. Mr. Hettleman is very supportive of the learning model at Northpoint and looks forward to contributing to the future of the learning community through his service on the Governing Board.
Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy is a public, state-funded, accredited charter school that opened in 2006 in Prescott. The school is located near the downtown area at 551 First Street. Visitors and volunteers are welcome on campus. New students are being accepted in grades 7 through 12 for the upcoming school year.
