The Colleton Prep varsity War Hawk baseball team went 1-1 last week, earning an 18-10 win over Hilton Head Christian and taking a 7-6 loss to nearby rival Dorchester Academy.
Colleton Prep is 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Region IV-AA.
In the conference win over Hilton Head Christian Monday March 1, Carter Smoak earned the start and lasted two complete innings. Smoak allowed two earned runs on six hits and issued two walks. Colton Daniels went the distance, allowing no earned runs on three hits and striking out 12.
The War Hawks collected 14 hits in the game and would be led by Drew Murdaugh at the plate going 3-5 with five runs driven in. Pete Peters, Colton Daniels, and Grayson Mills each managed multiple hits in the game, with all nine starters having at least one hit.
“Hilton Head Christian jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the top of the third inning with seven of those runs coming unearned,” said Coach Collin Miller. “We went on to answer with two in the third, three in the fourth, eight in the fifth, and we added three more in the sixth to cap the scoring.”
In the loss to Dorchester Academy on Thursday, March 4, player Kyle Hooker earned the start and lasted three and two-thirds innings allowing three earned runs on four hits, issuing eight walks, and striking out two. Carter Smoak finished the game, allowing no earned runs on three hits, issuing a walk, and earning a strikeout.
Colleton Prep had eight hits in the game and would be led by Cole Gullotti who went 2-3 with 4-RBI’s, including a grand slam in the first inning. Kyle Hooker collected his third homerun on the season with a solo in the third inning. Pete Peters, Caden Crosby, Colton Daniels, Huiett Rowe and Hayden Williams recorded a hit each.
“Thursday’s game against Dorchester Academy was a heartbreaker for us as we lost the lead late in a 7-6 defeat,” said Miller. “Dorchester trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning when they got a late single, scoring two runs.”
The junior varsity team lost 11-0 against Dorchester on Thursday evening. Two hits were picked up in the loss, one each by Braeden Hiers and Britton Phillips. Wylan Sheffield started on the mound and went two innings, Will Cain went two thirds of an inning, and Jeb Bootle threw the last inning and a third. .
Colleton Prep was scheduled to travel to Hilton Head Christian on Tuesday, March 9 and will host Hilton Head Prep on Friday, March 12.
